Spring was supposed to be all about the rebirth. So why did it always seem like the exact opposite? Everywhere he looked things were dead or dying. For as long as he could remember.

Long ago it was the crops not sprouting because the ground was too poor; years of overfarming having drained all the goodness from the soil.

Lindsey smirked; he knew the feeling.

Too long spent with the Firm and all the goodness had drained from him too.

Every spring he thought about getting out, being reborn somewhere new.

Every spring the thought died along with his dreams.
