Deepest Cut

An aborted shout, a final rattle, a body hits the reed bed. Accusing eyes seem to see into his soul.

John knows he'll never forget this.

This is why he's here, this is his purpose now.

He can't do it.

He never thought it would be like this. The lifeless eyes staring at him don’t look like those of a monster, they don't look all that different from his own.

The bile rises and John struggles to swallow it; his patrol will be here in seconds and he doesn't want that to be how he's known.
